Support the transition for fossil heating networks and switching to sustainable fuels

Some markets have a relatively high share of heating needs met by heat networks. While some of these networks can be fuel agnostic, coal and gas have remained the dominate fuel source globally, supplying the vast majority of buildings. For this reason, policymakers should consider supporting the transition from fossil fuels in existing heating networks toward technologies that use sustainable fuels and/or waste heat. Policymakers can facilitate the transition through carbon pricing or providing grants to fund the switch to low-carbon technologies.
