Targeted Subsidies for Emerging Technologies: North America
Support carbon capture, utilization and storage projects and infrastructure and other carbon removal technologies, Support low-carbon hydrogen production close to demand
An essential technology for power and industrial decarbonization is low-carbon hydrogen. Governments and companies can mitigate the technical challenges associated transporting and storing hydrogen by supporting low-carbon hydrogen production close to demand. This helps reduce the resources and investments required to build out transport pipelines and storage hubs. Strategic placement of production can help secure demand and lower the costs for both the producer and the industrial procuring hydrogen. At times, this is not possible, due to space constraints or high costs, but it’s a good principle to strive for.
